Discipline Guidelines

No child should be smacked, roughly treated, verbally or emotionally belittled.

Behaviour will be dealt with by:

  • Speaking directly to the child and explain their behaviour is unacceptable.
  • Distracting the child's attention.
  • Removing the child from the source of disruption and involving them in an alternative activity.
  • Giving the child/children concerned the opportunity to talk about their behaviour and give their ideas and opinions on how to solve problems/manage their behaviour.
  • Giving them the time and space to calm down and reflect on their behaviour.
  • Offering the opportunity for physical outlet of their aggression by means of physical play.
  • Talking to them calmly and objectively and asking their opinion on how to deal with the problem and why they think it happened.
  • Asking them to choose what they would like to do as an alternative.
  • Encourage them to play a part in apologising to the person they have hurt/offended.
  • Following the child that has been hurt to speak to the offender and say what they would like to happen.
  • By liasing closely with the staff team, manager and parents/carers, we would hope to be able to overcome any problems.

In situations where after liasing with parents/carers, we feel it necessary, we will seek advise from outside agencies, education welfare, educational psychologists etc and implement any plan of action they advise.

In extreme cases of serious disruptive behaviour and where all efforts made have failed to overcome the problem, parents/carers could be asked to remove the child from the nursery.
